Characters: Emmeline and Benjy
For: [info]morgielefae

The mission had not gone well. Emmeline accepted this as fact as she rested her head against the wall. What was to be a simple reconnaissance mission became a hostage situation. She had tailed a suspicious group until they surrounded a witch. Emmeline was able to fight them off enough to give the woman a chance to run. Her own escape did not go as well as she had to fight her way out.The order member did not come out unscathed. Her right arm and left leg were not functioning. She managed to crawl to the end of a small garden. Trespassing would be a more correct way to put it. It wouldn't have been so horrible if Emmeline's wand hadn't fallen down somewhere along the way. She was utterly useless and helpless and oh how she hated it.

Maybe Emmeline should have let Benjy be her partner. The rest of Order did not protest to her solo mission. He kept insisting even to the point of pulling her aside after the meeting. She just said no. What Emmeline didn't tell him was that she wanted to prove she can handle it all on her own. A bitter laugh escaped as she had to admit to herself that she only half succeeded. A male voice called out her name in the distance. Only a few of the Order knew where she went. She hoped it was Lupin who wouldn't ask questions. It was only when it was a few feet away did she recognize the nervous tone. The same one who tried to talk her out of this earlier today. Emmeline frowned to herself. It figured that the one to find her would be Benjy. She just had to prove him right, didn't she? "Over here," she called out weakly.

The sound of feet running on pavement caused her to find some strength to look up. "Oh god," Benjy said as he always did when he found something unpleasant. Emmeline had it in her to bother to chuckle. "Aren't I quite the sight?" He filled her vision as he knelt in front of her to survey the damage. "What hurts?" This is why he was a wonderful Healer. Always straight to the point. "I think my arm and leg are broken. Can't move them." Benjy as gently as he could took one arm to see it. Emmeline hissed in response. "Sorry." Emmeline would have shook her head if she could. "Don't be. It's my fault."

She noted the grimace as Benjy prepared himself to talk. "I'm going to have to set it before I can move you." Perfect. Just perfect. It was like fate itself was laughing at her. "It's going to hurt. You need to focus on something." Easy for him to say. He wasn't about to experience pain. Still she humored him."Like what?" The frown on his face wouldn't leave and for some reason that bothered Emmeline. "I don't know. The sunset?"

She rolled her eyes but tried his suggestion. Tried and failed as her eyes kept straying down to watch the man in front of her. There wasn't many opportunities for Emmeline to look at Benjy without any reservation. He was good looking in the average sort of way. The kind you'll do a double take in the street but not make a full stop. It was a wonder how he manage not to be taken. But life as an Order member was hard. Those paired off were with fellow Order or married before hand. Marriage was certainly not in her future but maybe his.

There was an audible intake of air as she felt and heard the snap of her right arm. One more to go. Focus. Focus. Again she tried to stare at the sky but found her gaze resting on Benjy. The normally warm eyes were filled with concentration, worry, and something she couldn't decipher. His hair was still as messy as ever. Maybe it was the light hitting it but her fingers itched to run through it to see if it was soft as it looked. She must be going into shock. Emmeline was sure of it. That would explain everything in a nice neat package. Just the way she liked it.

His hands left her arm which now felt cold despite the summer weather. Usually, Emmeline found sunsets as depressing. Another day in her life gone. Yet now she couldn't say for sure. Maybe it meant another day alive. The remaining sun seemed to halo around Benjy. She wasn't that far gone to not know it was just because he was standing directly in front of it. It still was great imagery for her savior. Did she actually think that? A laugh bubbled out of her. His head bobbed up to stare at her in confusion. "What?" She turned her gaze upwards to the sky. "Nothing. This is just not the way I saw my day going." She read the frustrated look in his face. He opted not to comment which she supposed was for the best. Last thing Emmeline needed now was a lecture.

Hands were now pressed on her left leg. She assumed he was inspecting it before snapping it in place. She wondered if the warmth there was his hands or a really severe symptom of her injury. "Get ready." Emmeline stared up to the purple and blue hued sky. Emmeline tried to restrain the moan in pain as he set her leg. As the sudden pain started to leave, her gaze fell down from the sky to find Benjy staring at her. The question that had been in her mind since she heard his voice escaped from her lips. "Why did you come?" He looked away and placed her useful arm around his neck. Emmeline was confused until he carefully looped his arms under her legs. He was going to carry her. "I'm not a princess," she muttered more to herself than to him. "Yes, you are." Emmeline sighed in response as she placed her head on his shoulder. She hoped he would not read into it. "Are you going to answer my question?" Emmeline tried to look up to him to find that same indecipherable look in his eye. Behind him the stars started to shine signifying night. "I told you before you left. I don't think you should be alone."
